Fishing Near Hamilton

The Hamilton region is a genuine freshwater fishing paradise, with a superb selection of waterways, lakes and rivers within easy reach of the park. Whether you're an experienced angler chasing trophy brown trout in a wild river or a family looking for an easy afternoon bait fishing from a lake foreshore, the Southern Grampians has something for everyone who loves to fish.

Hamilton Lake itself is the most accessible fishing spot — just a 5-minute walk from the park — and holds a healthy population of redfin perch. The easy paved foreshore access makes it suitable for all ages and abilities. Further afield, the Glenelg River (40 km west) offers excellent brown trout and redfin fishing along stretches of beautiful native bush. Lake Muirhead (30 km) is popular for golden perch (yellow belly) and redfin, while the Wannon River near Cavendish is a favourite with fly fishers pursuing brown trout.

All freshwater fishing in Victoria requires a current fishing licence. A day licence ($28) is available at the park office or online through the VFA website, with season and annual licences offering better value for frequent anglers. The best seasons for freshwater fishing in the Hamilton area are autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November), when water temperatures are ideal and fish are most active.

🎣 Fishing Licence Required
