About Hamilton Lake

Hamilton Lake is a stunning 45-hectare artificial lake located right on the edge of Hamilton's CBD, making it one of the most accessible natural attractions in the region. The lake was created in the 1960s and has since become the centrepiece of Hamilton's outdoor lifestyle drawing visitors and locals alike for recreation, relaxation and connection with nature.

A beautiful 3km paved walking and cycling path circles the entire lake, offering peaceful views of the water, surrounding parklands and the wetland fringes that attract prolific birdlife. The foreshore is home to black swans, pelicans, ducks and a wide variety of waterbirds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.

With barbecue shelters, picnic tables, playgrounds and open lawns, Hamilton Lake is the perfect spot for a family day out. Non-motorised boating is permitted on the lake, and the calm waters also make for excellent freshwater fishing — with redfin perch and other species known to inhabit the lake.
