About Mt Rouse
Mt Rouse is a beautifully shaped dormant volcanic cone rising above the pleasant town of Penshurst in the Southern Grampians Shire. Part of the Western Volcanic Plains — one of the world's largest basalt plains — Mt Rouse is one of the most accessible and rewarding of the region's many volcanic features, offering a short but scenic walking trail to the summit.
The 45-minute return walk to the summit follows a well-formed path through native grassland and scrub, climbing steadily to the top of the cone where expansive views reward the effort. From the summit, visitors can see across an extraordinary landscape of volcanic lakes, plains and distant ranges — a view that dramatically illustrates the scale of ancient volcanic activity in this region.
Looking down from the summit, you can clearly see Lake Purdiguluk — a near-perfect circular volcanic lake formed in a maar crater. The lake's almost perfectly round shape is a striking reminder of the violent geological forces that shaped this landscape. Historic dry-stone walls built by early European settlers also add a heritage element to the walk.
